Title: Empowering the Internet of Agricultural Things with AI for Smarter Agriculture
Dr. Simone Silvestri (Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. Before joining UK, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Pennsylvania State University.)
Abstract: Agriculture faces growing challenges, including rising costs, labor shortages, and the increasing need for efficiency and product quality. The Internet of Agricultural Things (IoAT) offers promising solutions through technologies such as weather and soil sensors, automated feeders, RFID tags, and computer vision systems, enabling data-driven decision-making. However, widespread adoption is hindered by constraints such as limited broadband connectivity, low-power device capabilities, costs, and farmer acceptance of new technologies. In this talk, we first provide an overview of IoAT technologies and their impact on modern farming. Motivated by connectivity challenges, we present iCrop+, a LoRa-based crop disease detection system that integrates on-device AI with deep learning for remote processing. We evaluate iCrop+ using a real-world prototype, demonstrating its viability for deployment in resource-constrained agricultural environments. Subsequently, we discuss the use of IoAT technologies for disease detection in diary calves. We present a framework that efficiently performs cost-aware feature selection to provide high accuracy in detecting Bovine Respiratory Disease while reducing the cost for farmers. We conclude by providing some feature research directions and open problems

Title: Bless Its Heart, It Compiles: A Case for the Folkways of Computing Fundamentals
Dr. Chelsie Dubay (Assistant Professor of Computing and the Eastman Chair of Leadership at East Tennessee State University)
Abstract: In the South, "bless its heart" is how you say something looks fine on the surface but isn't quite right underneath. It's also a fair review of a lot of "vibe-coded" projects. The code compiles and runs, but it's wrong in ways only someone who understands the fundamentals will catch. As generative AI takes on more of the routine work of writing code, academic computing programs face growing pressure to trim the "old" material that tells the story of how computing works. This talk argues that the old ways aren't going away. On the contrary, they should become the foundation of AI fluency. In Appalachia, knowledge has long traveled through storytelling and lessons shared on front porches and in kitchens. Think of a family recipe. It's an algorithm, but rarely a precise one. It calls for "a pinch" or "a handful" or cooking "until it looks right," and it only works if you've stood beside someone at the stove and learned what right looks like. AI can hand students the recipe card, but the fundamentals are where they learn what right looks like. After all, a recipe you can't make without the card isn't really yours, and the same is true of code. We'll explore how these Appalachian folkways can be retooled for teaching computing fundamentals, and how they help us decide what students can safely offload to AI and what they need to carry themselves. We'll close with the case for clear programming baselines and practical ideas for preparing graduates for an AI-forward job landscape while still passing down the old ways
