At the Fall 2009 Board Meeting, a new Distinguished Service Award was established to recognize and honor individuals who have a long history of meritorious and significant service to the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges. Longtime CCSC member Susan Dean is the first individual to be so honored.

Susan earned the BA in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University, and the MS and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has worked at various times as a programmer, programmer/analyst, systems analyst, and project manager in the areas of medical information systems, small business support, and life insurance. She has been involved in teaching and curriculum development in computing at Samford University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and currently is at University of Maryland University College Europe.

Susan’s contributions to CCSC have been numerous starting in 1989 as the Local Arrangements Co-chair for the Third Annual CCSC:Southeastrn Conference. Since then her contributions have included serving as President in 1998-1999 and 2006-2008, Chair of the Audit Committee from 2001-2004, Program Co-chair for CCSC:Southeastern Conference from 1990-2001, Publicity Chair for CCSC:Southeastern Conference since 2002, and as a member of the Bylaws Committee. And most impressively, she has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges since 2002.
